Who are the Rohingya?
One of, if not the most discriminated people in the world, the Rohingya are one of Myanmar’s many ethnic minorities. At 2017, there were million in the state with linguistic, cultural and religious differences.
How are the Rohingya discriminated?
The government of Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist country, denies the Rohingya citizenship and do not recognise them as people instead seeing them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Why did the Rohingya flee their homes?
Rohingya Arsa militants launched a deadly attack on more than 30 police posts forcing the Rohingya to arrive in Bangladesh where at least 6700 were killed in a month. Girls were raped and abused and around 288 villages were destroyed.
What is happening to the Rohingya now?
With more than half a million Rohingya believed to still be living in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine provinence, UN investigators have warned there are serious risk that genocidal actions may recur.
