When was the First Battle of Ypres and what happened?
A
- The First Battle of Ypres happened from October-
November in 1914 - The British managed to hold onto the Ypres which was
important as it maintained access and control of English
Channel ports - but Germans gained ground

When was Battle on Hill 60 and what happened?
A
- It happened in April 1915
- British tunnelled into and under the hill and exploded 5
mines (from tunnels) which enabled them to take the hill

A
- It happened from April-May in 1915
- Germans made a slight gain towards Ypres
- This battle was notable for being the first time that
chlorine gas was used (by Germans)

- It happened from July-November in 1916
- Notable for extremely high casualties on both sides
- Battles on both sides of the River Somme saw two new
strategies by British - the creeping barrage + use of
tanks (had little impact)

- In 1916, British linked + expanded underground tunnels,
quarries and caves for shelter and movement of troops - Tunnels used to launch battle which was successful but
resulted in little progress + high casualties for both sides

- British used the creeping barrage to make small gains to break out the Ypres Salient
- Bad weather led to ground waterlogging and many
drowned

- Notable for first large scale use of tanks
- They were successful but not backed up so British were
