- The British managed to hold onto Ypres
- This was vital in maintaining access to English channel ports
- However the Germans gained ground

- April 1915
- British tunnelled into and under the hill and exploded five mines from the tunnels
- This enabled them to take over the hill

Second battle of Ypres

- April - May 1915
- Germans made very slight gains towards Ypres
- First time chlorine gas was used by the Germans

The battle of the Somme

- July - November 1916
- Extremely high casualties on both sides
- Two new strategies by the British;
- the creeping barrage
- first use of tanks
- However these seemed to have little impact

A
- April - May 1917
- The tunnels that the British expanded in 1916, were used to launch the battle
- This was initially successful but ended up with little progress
- High number of casualties on both sides

Third battle of Ypres
A
- July - November 1917
- British used a creeping barrage to make small gains to break out the Ypres Salient
- The bad weather left the ground waterlogged and many soldiers drowned

- First large-scale use of tanks
- Tanks were successful but not baked up
- British were forced back
