Who was harold hardrada?

A

Harold hardrada was the king of norway and had already succesfully conqured some of Europe. His name striked fear in the heart of enemies. He had royal english heratige so the king promised him england after he died, this had not come true. He was eventually defeated by harold godwinson after defeating many towns in northern england.

Who was harold godwinson?

A

Harold godwinson was a rich english men who owned many towns. He was also a good army general. On his death bed the past king also promised him england. He stationed his troops on the south coast as he was expecting a french attack. He then marched up to the north to defeat the vikings at stamford bridge. His tired troops had to march back down to the hastings in the south coast to fight the french led by william of normandy. He eventually lost and was otherthrown after being king for a very short time.

Who was william of normandy?

A

William was a french leader and dukee of normandy. He was promised england by the past king. He tried to head an attack on england but was delayed by winds heading against his ships. He eventually arrived in the south coast of england. There him and his army defeated the english under the charge of king harold godwinson. William became king but had to fight and implant new ways to earn the citizens’ respect.

A

Many english soldiers died for a fight they were never going to win. English citizns died at williams hand during his reign due to revolts against a french king.

What were the positive consequences?

A

Someone new was in charge. The saxons had been in control for 600 years so a new culture and new way of life was an important and good thing. It also connected britain to europe through william being at a high position in france as well as king of england.
