Battle of Agincourt Flashcards
Sides and leaders of armies
French army led by Charles d’Albret fought the English army led by Henry V
Composition of armies
Henry had 12000, 9000 of which were archers
French army had 15000 troops; 10000 armoured cavalry and 5000 infantry
Positions of armies
Henry had surveyed the area the night before to look for the best positioning. He placed his army in a narrow gap between 2 woodlands, with his men at arms at the centre and archers hiding in the wood. There was also wet heavy clay which was hard to cross. The french army was 1000 metres away from the English.
What was the outcome
English victory
Reasons for outcome
Henry’s defensive positioning was very good, French army relied too much on cavalry and so archers and infantry were underused, the French cavalry attack was uncoordinated with the other parts of the army, the English longbowmen could fure 100000 arrows per minute at the French.
