What is a block?
A spot at the bottom of the key
What is a Box-out?
To position your body between an opposing player and the basket to gain an advantage in getting the rebound
What is a bounce pass?
A slow pass that is bounced on the floor 3/4 of the way to the teammate’s waist. (A pass that bounces)
What is a chest pass?
THe quickest pass where the ball is thrown at the chest of the teammate.
What is dribbiling
When a player bounces the ball on the floor so that they can move around
What is the elbow?
THe top corners of the key
What is a fast-break?
When you move the ball quickly up the court ahead of the defense right after you get a rebound
What is a lay-up?
A shot taken right next to the right or left side of the basket. (right handed layup is jumping off left foot)
What does man to man mean?
A defensive strategy where each player guards a specific memeber of the opposing team
What is passing?
When a player throws the ball to another player on their team to hopefully get an open shot.
What is a pivot?
When players who hold the ball keep one foot on the ground while moving another foot.
What is a rebound?
When you get the ball after the opposing team misses a shot.
What is a screen or pick?
When an offensive player positions themselves to impede the movement of a defensive player
What is a field goal?
A basked made from the court during play. Free throws are one point.
What is a free throw?
A penalty shot taken unapposed from the foul/free throw line, awarded after a foul from the opposing team
What is a full-court press?
A defensive strategy to aggressively challenge the team with the ball the whole length of the court.
What is a give-and-go?
Passing the ball to a teammate and then cutting to the basket.
What is a jump shot?
When a player jump to a position and take a shot quickly.
What is a two hand overhead pass?
Literally exactly what it sounds like. Think soccer. Also, generally used to throw over the heads of defenders.
What is a zone/zoning?
A defensive strategy where each player guards/defends a certain area around the basket rather than a specific person.
What is a shot?
When someone tries to throw the ball into the hoop.
What is a three-point shot?
A shot outside of the three point line (worth three points).
What is a transition
After the change of possession from offense to defense, it is the time when the new offense moves the ball to the other end of the court
