symbolic communication- social, intellectual, doesnt have to e spoken , rule govern, conventional, arbitrary.
What is phonology?
perception and production of sounds used in language
speech sounds that compose langauage
what is a phoneme?
smallest unit of sound e.g. b/p/a
happens in a continuous stream
What is orthography?
letters
What is graphemes
smallest unit of text
letters corrospend to phonemes- not 1-1 though, e..g s can be s, c, ss, sc, x, st, ps
What are semantics?
meaning of language
Morphemes?
smallest meaningful unit
semantics- words?
have multiple meanings e.g roll can mean read roll or to roll down a hill.
Pragmatics?
knowledge about how language is used in different contexts
non linguistic- considers communicative function - can be social or intellectual -
we may adjust our language due to context
or socially e.g. turn taking
or perspective taking (take account of others perspectives such as the listeners knowledge)
or intonation (variation in pitch) and prosody (tone and rythm of speech)
what is syntax?
form in which words are combined to make grammatical sentences
