Basics of probality Flashcards
Phenomenon
some result we would like to observe
Sample space
is the set of all possible outcomes of a phenomenon such that the outcomes are miutally exclusive
Discrete sample space
A sample space is discrete when the total number of possible outcomes cna be easily defined and written out
Continous sample space
A sample space is continous when the tital number of possible outcomes uncountably infinte and cannot be written out
An event
An event is any collection of outcomes of a random phenomenon
what does probality attempyt to descirbve
Probality attempts to descirve the long term patterns of random phenomenon
what is probability of an event
The probability of an event is the proportion of times the event occurs in many repeated trials of a random phenomenon
what do we want repeated trails trails to be?
independent
Independence
The outcome of one trail does not influence the outcome of any other trail
disjointed events
Two events H and G are disjoint if they dont share any outcomes
can disjointed events occur simultaneously
no they can not
Probability axioms rules
P(H or G) = P(H) + p (G)
In a continuous probability model the probality of any indviual outcome is
0 because a continous sample spce includes uncountably infinitely many outcomes, it is impossible to expect any one particular outcome to occur
