Basics of Pharmacology Flashcards
Pharmaceutics
The science of preparing drugs for administration- “Dosage Forms”
Pharmacokinetics
The study of the absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs - “What the body does to the drug”
Pharmacodynamics
The study of the action or effects of drugs on living systems - “What the drug does to the body”
General Properties of Drugs
- modify existing fx
- -Replace: iron in anemia
- -Interrupt: ipratropium
- -Potentiate: cathartics before sigmoidoscopy
- multiple effects (minoxidil bp+hair loss)
- interact with something to exert effect
Levels of Drug Activity
- Body Systems
- Component Tissues
- Cellular Level
- Molecular Level
Beta-Blocker levels of drug activity
Body Systems - Reduces pulse rate
Component Tissues - Negative chronotrope
Cellular Level - Prevents elevation of cAMP
Molecular Level - Competitive antagonism of norepinephrine to cardiac beta1 receptors
Agonism
activates R
-intrinsic activity = 1
Partial Agaonsim
intrinsic activity < 1
Antagonism
Binding R prevents agonist effect
Competitive Antagonism
Agonist and antagonist both trying to bind to the sae receptor
Noncompetitive Antagonism
- Binding of antagonist to one receptor prevents agonist from binding to another receptor
- Agonist must not be bound in order for antagonist to bind
