What are characteristics of interviewing in qualitative research?
- Recruitment/selection

- Listening: assessing if you gathered all info needed
- Introduction: what is the research about, who you are, your bakcground, estimated length, anonymity/confidentiality, recording
- Closing: anything to add, have questions, contact if questions
- Attitude: distance/closeness, eye contact, experession, tone/volume
What are tips to create a good research question?
1) Stick to one or two research questions
2) Open, brief, concise, clear
3) Qualitative words: experence, behavior, perceptions, attitude
4) Avoid quantitative words: influence, effect, determine, extent
5) Specific study participants and setting

Statement of problen, RQ, relevance, review of literature, methods

What are tips for conducting interviews?
- Arrange to interview in a quiet, semi-private placec
- Block off plenty of uninterrupted time
- Start with script
- First question is general, open-ended, clear
- Take brief notes to maintain eye contact
- Ask as few questions as possible (interviewee should do talking)
- End with script
- Have genuine care, concern, interest for the person
- Use basic counseling skills to help feeling heard
- Keep it focused but also listen to ask probes for additional info
- Respect the pace and do not be afraid of pauses
- Refrain from suggesting answers
What is the difference between structured and semi-structured interviews?
Structured interviews have all questions and their order completely fixed, like an oral questionnaire
Semi-structured interviews: have main questions and their order fixed but deviations are possible
What is a good interview question?
It has a suitable intro, is concise as possible, is understood by the interviewee, tackles one topic at a time, is open and neutral
What are common pitfalls?
1) Being too easily statisfied with an answer
2) No introduction of new questions
3) Long, complex, closed, leading questions
4) Wanting to impress the interviewee with your knowledge
5) Not wanting to appear uninformed
