Basics Of Hematology Flashcards
What cells of immune system belong to myeloid progeny?
Neutrophils
Basophils
Eosinophils
Monocytes - macrophages & dendritic cells
What cells belong to the lymphoid progeny?
T lymphocytes
B lymphocyte
NK killer cells
Which cells are part of the innate immune system?
Neutrophils
Basophils
Eosinophils
Monocytes: macrophages & dendritic cells
NK cells
Which cells are part of the adaptive immunity & what parts of this immunity?
T lymphocytes & B lymphocytes
T lymphocytes - cell mediated immunity
B lymphocytes - humoral immunity
What does a neutrophil look like under microscopy?
Multiple lobes
Granules ~ evenly distributed
Lilac colour
What does a basophil look like under microscopy?
Stains blue-purple
Has many granules that actually obscure the 2 lobe nucleus
What does an eosinophil look like under microscopy?
2 lobe nucleus
Red-Orange
Many granules ~ uniform size
What does a monocyte look like under microscopy?
Kidney shaped nucleus
What does a lymphocyte look like under microscopy?
Large dark nucleus, with a thin border of cytoplasm
What does a Reed-Sternberg cell look like & what is it typically found in?
Looks like owl eyes
Hodgkin Lymphoma
What is a smudge cell & what could it indicate?
Damaged lymphocyte during blood film preparation
Could indicate fragility of cell ~ indicating CLL possibly
What are Auer rods and what could it indicate?
Long needle appearance in cells (myeloblast)
Pathognomonic for AML
What is a blast cell?
Blast cells are precursors to neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes, erythrocytes
