Basics - clutch control Flashcards
What is the order for starting on a hill?
- gas down
- clutch up to biting point
- handbrake off
- off clutch completely and accelerate
Main thing to remember when wanting to accelerate smoothly from stationary
come off clutch gradually and not suddenly
How to move slowly without stalling?
use clutch for speed control with gas on at minimum
When should you put clutch down first instead of brake?
when at slower speeds closer to the gear’s naturally desired speed
Should you always put the clutch down when you brake?
Not necessarily, only if slowing down means going down a gear
why should you hold the clutch steady on the biting point when moving off from stationary?
to let the revs match the car speed before coming off the clutch entirely
how should you come off the clutch when going up a gear?
bring temporarily to rev-matching point for a moment before coming off completely to help smoothness
What are the steps to shifting down a gear without brake?
same as up a gear but you will have to hold the clutch at biting point for much longer (if you haven’t used the brake to slow already)
should you be in a lower or higher gear ahead of overtaking a vehicle?
lower. A lower gear allows you to have a sharper acceleration
what are the steps to shifting down a gear when using the brake to slow
Make sure you hold the clutch at biting point before continuing at the desired gear. Add gas to help rev matching if necessary as lower gears want more revs
How to accelerate away quickly from stationary?
Clutch down
use gas to bring revs to 2000
bring clutch up to biting point
Increase gas and off clutch together
clutch off. gas on
