Basics Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O + energy –> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is a metabolic pathway?
Series of small reactions controlled by enzymes
What is phosphorylation?
Adding phosphate to a molecule
What is photophosphorylation?
Adding phosphate to a molecule using light
What is photolysis?
Splitting of a molecule using light energy
What is hydrolysis?
Splitting of a molecule using water
What is decarboxylation?
Removal of carbon dioxide from a molecule
What is dehydrogenation?
Removal of hydrogen from a molecule
What is a photosynthetic pigment?
Coloured substances that absorb the light energy for photosynthesis
What is a photosystem?
Photosynthetic pigments attached to proteins
What are the two different photosystems?
PSI (700nm) and PSII (680nm)
What is the stroma?
Gel-like substance containing enzymes, sugars and organic acids
What happens to the carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis?
Not used straight away and stored as starch grains in the stroma
What do plants use energy for?
Photosynthesis, active transport, DNA replication, cell division and protein synthesis
