CN VII: name
Facial
Facial: number
CN VII
What’s the difference between facial nerve and CN VII?
“Facial nerve proper” means the motor portion. CN VII also has greater petrosal (carries parasympathetic fibres) and special sense (chorda tympani) branches before exiting skull.
Facial: route and branches
Motor and sensory roots fuse (=geniculate ganglion) then gives off 3 interracial branches (greater petrosal nerves, nerve to stapedius and chorda tympani)
(Exits at stylomastoid foramen)
3 motor branches (posterior auricular, nerve to digastric, nerve to stylohyoid)
Then last 5 branches:
- temporal
- zygomatic
- buccal
- marginal mandibular
- cervical
