What is the purpose if the BLUE trash bags?
To properly dispose of all confidential Pharmacy trash, Pharmacy records, and Front Store confidential materials.
What is the purpose of the GREEN trash bags?
To ensure the proper disposal of all medicinal bottles, including those with PHI attached.
What does NDC stand for?
National Drug Code
How many digits are in an NDC, and how are they separated?
11 digits. Separated as 5-4-2. (12345-6789-10)
What do the first five numbers of an NDC identify?
The manufacturer.
What do the middle four digits of an NDC identify?
Medication name, strength, and dosage form.
What do the last two digits of an NDC identify?
The package size.
Four reasons to take generic over name-brand drugs?
- ) Bioequivalent (made of at least 98% same materials, difference is fillers, dyes, etc)
- ) Therapeutically equivalent (does the same thing)
- ) Usually costs a lot less
- ) MOST insurances prefer generics
What is a Schedule I (CI) substance?
Not found in pharmacies; it is illegal to possess them in the US. (Ex: Cocaine, Methamphetamine, etc.)
What is a Schedule II (CII) substance?
Also known as narcotics (N). Only pharmacists may handle narcotics and fill narcotic prescriptions.
What is are Schedule III-IV (CIII-CIV) substances?
Controlled substances that are less addictive than CI-CII, but may cause a physical or psychological dependence.
What is a Schedule V (CV) substance?
Usually cough suppressants or anti-diarrheals. They have limited potential for abuse.
What must be present on written prescriptions?
- Pt full name & address
- Prescriber full name, address, & DEA #
- Drug name, strength, dosage form, quantity, & directions
- Signature of prescriber & date issued
