Basics Flashcards
All living organisms must what?
Adapt, have biological organization, grow and develop, acquire energy, transmit genetic info across generations, exhibit homeostasis, and interact with others
Order from DNA to proteins
DNA ➡️ transcription ➡️ RNA ➡️ translation ➡️ protein
Transcription is one way except for who?
Viruses
Function of proteins
Maintaining structure, generating movement, sensing signals
Function of enzymes
Provide favorable environment to allow the reactions to occur at significantly faster rates
Ploidy
How many copies of each chromosome you have
Diploid
You have two copies of each chromosome except for the sex chromosomes. Humans are diploid organisms
Haploid
You only have a single copy of any chromosome. What organisms include bacteria, asexually, reproducing organisms, male bees, reproduction cells, and plants have a haploid phase in their life cycle.
Polyplody
Multiple copies of each chromosome. Polyploidy is normal in plants.
Mitosis
Asexual, somatic cells, one round of division, two daughter cells, maintain ploidy
Meiosis
Sexual, germline cells, two rounds of division, four daughter cells, half ploidy- diploid becomes haploid.
