What are the two models used in the Cognitive Approach?

  • Theoretical model - simplified representations based on current research
  • Computer models - uses computer analogies: words such as inputting, coding and retrieval

What are the problems with the models used in the Cognitive Approach?

A
  • Both models are simplified not complex like the
    human mind
  • Computer models ignore human features eg, emotion
  • Unlike computers, you cannot fill up a ‘hard drive’ (LTM)

What are schemas?

A
  • Package of stored knowledge of the world in the LTM

They allow us to:

  • Make sense of what we encounter
  • Predict what is going to happen
  • Behave appropriately
