Basics Flashcards
This deck covers the cognitive approach and schemas
1
Q
What are the two models used in the Cognitive Approach?
A
- Theoretical model - simplified representations based on current research
- Computer models - uses computer analogies: words such as inputting, coding and retrieval
2
Q
What are the problems with the models used in the Cognitive Approach?
A
- Both models are simplified not complex like the
human mind - Computer models ignore human features eg, emotion
- Unlike computers, you cannot fill up a ‘hard drive’ (LTM)
3
Q
What are schemas?
A
- Package of stored knowledge of the world in the LTM
They allow us to:
- Make sense of what we encounter
- Predict what is going to happen
- Behave appropriately
4
Q
What if we lack an appropriate schema for something?
A
- We find it harder to make sense of information
- Will have to make a new schema if cannot be fitted into any others
5

How can our mental schemas lead to inaccuracy?
A
- Stereotypes
- Expectations
- Assumptions
