Basics Flashcards
What is the importance of biosynthetic pathways?
Secondary metabolites are made from primary metabolites through a biosynthetic pathway, with all reactions being catalysed by enzymes. These enzymes can be introduced to new plants with similar pathways to produce specific metabolites
What is pharmacognosy?
The study of biologically active natural resources.
Where is pharmacognosy used?
Pharmacy, agriculture, cosmetics, etc (LOTS)
What are the current focuses in pharmacognosy?
- Study traditional medicines for safety and effectiveness
What is the definition of sustainability?
Resources can be maintained over time without damaging the environment - ecopharmacognosy
What are problems with pharmacognosy?
Regulatory issues and intellectual property
Where are standards found? What do they tell you?
Pharmacognosy regulations can be found in countries’ pharmacopeia.
