Basic topography of brain Flashcards
where does the seat of consciousness lie?
cerebral hemispheres
what is the function of the cerebellum?
balance and co-ordination
what 2 structures make up the diencephalon?
thalamus and hypothalamus
Label this diagram:
1- Cerebral cortex
2- Corpus callosum
3- Hypothalamus
4- Thalamus
5- Midbrain
6- Cerebellum
8- Spinal cord
9- Medulla
10- Pons
11- Brain stem
12- Pituitary
13- Meninges
14- Caudate nucleus
what are some of the important features that the brainstem holds?
- cranial nerve nuclei (-1 and 2)
- tract pathways
- vital centres for autonomic behaviours necessary for survival
what are some of the important vital functions that the brainstem controls?
alertness, breathing, digestion, HR, BP, circulation, swallowing
what are the ventricles?
The cavity of the neural tube persists in the adult brain as spaces called the ventricles, whereas the wall goes on to form brain
Outline the development of ventricles from neural tube
as soon as neural tube formed, it divides into 3 primary vesicles and then into secondary vesicles. These develop into the adult brain.
what do the ventricles contain?
CSF
what are the names of the primary and secondary vesicles? (diagram)
in which parts of brain do the ventricles sit?
frontal, temporal and occipital parts of brain
outline in which parts of brain you would find the different ventricles
- 2 lateral ventricles come together to form 3rd ventricle -within diencephalon= 3rd ventricle
- Within midbrain = cerebral aqueduct
- Between pons + medulla (in the front) and cerebellum at back = 4th ventricle
Where in the brain is CSF found?
- in ventricles
- subarachnoid space (between pia and arachnoid mater)
where are the lateral ventricles found?
in the cerebral hemispheres
what connects the lateral ventricles and 3rd ventricle?
interventricular foramen
