Basic Theory Notes random Flashcards
Describe Qi
a. both immaterial and material that manifests simultaneously on the spiritual and physical levelb. it is a refined essence produced by the internal organs that functions by nourishign the body and mindc. indicates functional activity of the organs
Describe Blood
a. dense material form of qib. Relationship with oransi. SP makes, LV stores, HT governsii. LU assists SP in making of bloodiii. KD essence and original qi play a role in making new bloodc. Functioni. provides material foundation for mindd. Blood/Qi (Qi controls blood but blood is the mother of Qi)i. Qi generates bloodii. qi moves bloodiii. qi holds bloodiv. blood nourishes qie. blood/essencei. each can transform into the otherii. essence plays a role in blood formation and blood nourishes essence
Describe Jing (essence)
a. Pre heaven- blending of sexual energies at conception, nourishes fetus, determines constitution, fixed in quality but can be positivly effectedb. Post Heaven- refined and extracted from foods, ST/SPc. KD- derived from previous 2, determines constitution, replenish by post heaven essence, stored in KD circulates all over body in 8 extrasi. growth and development, essence as a basis of KD Qi, essence produces marrow, essence as a basis of constitutional strength
Jin- thin light watery
i. circulates with wei qiii. moisten skin and musclesiii. manifests as teats, saliva, and mucus, but exudes as sweativ. part of blood fluid
Ye- turbid, heavy, dense
i. circulates with Ying Qi (interior)ii. SP and KD controliii. moistens joints, spine, brain, and bone marrow
Original–Yuan Qi
-Motive Force-Basis of Kidney Qi-Facilitates the -Transformation of Qi-Facilitates the transformation of Blood-Arises at the source pointsOriginates between the KD and derived from Pre-Heaven Essence
Food–Gu Qi
-Rises to LU to combine with Air= Gathering Qi-From LU travels to HT to be transformed into bloodFood enters the ST where it “rots and ripens” and is transformed into Food Qi by the SP
Gathering –Zong Qi
-Nourishes HT and LU-Enhances LU function-Controls respiration, Speech, and circulationFood Qi meeting with air in the LU
True–Zhen Qi
-Circulates in channels-Nourishes organs-Assumes 2 forms (Nutritive and Defensive Qi)-Originates from Gathering Qi in the LU
Nutritive–Ying Qi
-nourishes the internal organs of the body-flows in channels and blood vessels-more specific form of True Qi
Defensive–Wei Qi
-Circulates on the exterior of the body, outside the channels, between the muscles and skin-regulates pores and sweating and body temp-wars, moistens and partially nourishes the skin and muscles-protects against exterior pathogens-more specific, coarser form of True Qi
Describe Wei Qi-
• only exterior level• wind heat most common• common cold–> aversion to cold, sore throat, red tongue, thirst
Describe Qi
• interior but most superficial• “Nobody Dies at the Qi Level”• aversion to heat, thick yellow coating, high fever• Heat or fire
Describe Nutritive Qi (ying)
• yin is beginning to be injured• fever mental restlessness, spots on skin, organs are affected, losing consciousness• fever at night, red tongue without coat
Describe Blood (Xue)
• most interior• heat affects blood• plagues that manifest in warmer climates with convulsions and bleeding• delirium or coma, bleeding under the skin, yin or yang may collapse
1) Tai Yang- Greater Yang
• Only Exterior stage (Wind)• Aversion to cold, head ache/stiff neck, floating pulse –> common cold• wind induces sweating, cold has no sweating
Yang Ming- Bright Yang
• Interior and heat• 4 Bigs–> thirst, sweating, fever, pulse• Channel= heat, organ = fire• change from aversion to cold to aversion to heat is the sign of transformation from Tai yang to Yang ming
Shao Yang- Lesser Yang
• alternating interior and exterior• mono, lymes, epstein barr
Tai Yin- Greater Yin
• interior• SP yang deficiency with cold
Shao Yin- Lesser Yin
• interior• cold or heat
Jue Yin- Terminal Yin
• internal• heat above cold below
This condition is described based on the location of where the pathogen cam from…it will manifested as a fever no of the body but of the skin, aversion to cold, aching back stuff neck and floating pulse
The Exterior, has two kinds, skin muscles acute onset, channels affected which is a floating pulse.
Described where its describe where it is, the organs are affected
Its a signal change from exterior to interior, there will be a disappearance of aversion to cold and onset of aversion to heat
There are two kinds of heat name them
Full heat and empty heat
Describe Full heat
excess yang; thirst feeling of heat mental restlessness red face, dry stools scanty dark urine red tongue skin eruptions burning pain feeling dark red blood
Describe Empty heat
Deficiency of yin; heat in the afternoon, dry mount with desire for sm sips dry throat at night five palm heat scanty dark urine floating rapid pulse red peeled tongue this is organ specific
There are two types of cold, name them
Full cold and empty cold
