Basic Theory Flashcards
functions of qi

three treasures
jing (most substantive)
qi
shen (most immaterial)
four movements of qi

nine types of qi
Yuan Qi - Original Qi (a.k.a. KD Essence or Source Qi)
Zong Qi - Gathering Qi (Da + Gu)
Zhen Qi - True Qi (Zong + Yuan) “pool of undifferentiated qi”
Gu Qi - Food Qi (spleen, middle)
Da Qi - Air Qi (lungs, upper)
Ying Qi - Nutritive Qi
Nourishes the internal organs of the body. It’s closely linked to the blood and flows in the channels/blood vessels of the body
Wei Qi - Defensive Qi
Defends the body from external pathogens such as Wind, Cold, Heat, and Dampness. It’s coarser in nature and flows on the outer layers of the body, opening/closing the pores, and regulating temperature.
Zheng Qi - Upright Qi
Xie Qi - Evil Qi
three types of jing
pre heaven
post heaven
kidney jing
two types of fluids
Jin (Yang) –– thin, watery, exterior
Mucous
Saliva
Sweat
Ye (Yin) –– humor, thicker, interior
Synovial fluid
Spinal fluid
What are the six evils?
wind - migratory, numbness, tingling,
heat/fire - fire is worse, goes to upper body, scorches fluid
cold - fixed contracting stagnating feels better with warmth
damp - fixed, heavy, middle/lower jiao
dry - cant be internally generated.
summerheat - causes thirst, fever, and combines with dampness readily. will go to middle or lower jiao
Wen bing wei level symptom
Fever and chills
t: normal, maybe red tip
p: floating maybe rapid
Wen bing qi level symptom
Fever, no chills, thirst profuse sweating four bigs: fever, sweat, thirst, pulse cough, asthma, constipation or dysenteric diarrhea t: red pulse: rapid, flooding
Wen bing ying level symptom
Fever,
no thirst because st has been damaged. they will be sipping tea all day
five center heat
fine rashes
agitated, insomnia
t: red with yellow peeled coat (from st. qi damage)
Wen bing xue level symptom
All ying symptoms plus
spasms/tremors (tics or seizures). yin and blood has been damaged so wind arises.
reckless movement of hot blood, blood in stool, urine, uterus, from skin, from nose
p: wiry/small from wind and damage
t: purple red
order the shang han lun stages
tai yang yang ming shao yang tai yin shao yin jue yin
SHL Tai yang symptoms
exterior wind cold headache, stiff neck chills fever aversion to wind t: unchanged p: floating
excess fever and chills no perspiration (we need to make them sweat and release exterior!) tai yang headache lumbago t: normal P: tight and floating
deficiency (wind strike)
fever no chills
untherapeutic sweat (lung qi can’t close pores)
cold headache with tense muscles
we need to harmonize ying and wei
T: normal
P: moderate and floating edges of pulse are not clearly defined because the wei can’t stabilize the exterior
SHL shao yang symptoms
alternating chills and fever
irritability
pain in hypochondriac region
rebellious qi, nasuea belching, acid refl
SHL yang ming symptoms
four bigs
SHL Tai yin symptoms
damage to spleen
abdominal fullness from deficiency. they need pressure
diarrhea, nausea vomiting rebellion
fatigued low energy, feeling cold from qi def
SHL shao yin symptoms
yang deficiency type (damage to kidney yang)
aversion to cold, colder than tai yin feeling of cold. cold limbs
little thirst
preference for warm drinks
lies curled up under blankets
undigested food in diarrhea, cock’s crow diarrhea
copious clear urine
t:
p: pale flabby tongue
yin deficiency type
general yin def
irritability, tidal fever, malar flush, five center heat
dry mouth and throat, difficulty taking in fluid
scanty elimination, constipation, dark yellow urine
no desire for fluid
t: red, no coat
p: thin and rapid
SHL jue yin symptoms
hot cold complex
alternating cold and heat signs
vomiting of roundworms
mixed excess and deficiency
hungry and thirsty, but they will vomit right after eating. if they get a purgative, they’ll have continuous diarrhea
frequent urination
rushing up/rushing piglets (flaring up of heat with anxiety coming up) this is yang separating from yin
t: red papillae but slipper with clear thick or white coat
p: deep, hidden, wiry
what’s the diff between yang ming channel and yang ming organ symptoms?
both have four bigs but the organ has constipation, too
yang ming channel: clear heat drain fire
yang ming organ: purge heat
difference between tai yin fatigue with cold diarrhea or shao yang level yang def
yang deficiency has copious clear urine, tai yin cold does not.
spontaneous sweat during the day is associated with what diagnosis?
lung qi deficiency
cock’s crow diarrhea or copious clear urine is associated with what diagnosis?
kidney yang deficiency
what organ is the root of post heaven qi?
spleen
What organ controls inhalation?
What organ controls exhalation?
inhalation: kidney
exhalation: lung
what condition causes distending pain in the head?
liver yang rising
which is not a contraindication for acupuncture: overeating, overworking, intoxication, too hungry?
overeating
thirst with desire to sip liquid slowly is an indication of
yin deficiency
channel stroke vs organ stroke?
organ stroke: loss of consciousness
channel stroke: no loss of consciousness
tense-attention vs desertion flaccid type stroke?
tense-attention type - excess heat. scorching internal heat that lead to collapse. red faced, delirious speech, hot and dry. likely to have a seizure.
rescue yin
desertion-flaccid type - cold, acute collapse, no rigidity in limbs, jaw is slack, hands open
rescue yang
how can sweating create yang deficiency?
loss of wei qi via sweat
where does yuan qi exit?
source points
