Basic Terms Flashcards
CRISPR
clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats
palindromic repeats
A palindromic sequence is a sequence made up of nucleic acids within double helix of DNA and/or RNA that is the same when read from 5’ to 3’ on one strand and 5’ to 3’ on the other, complementary, strand. It is also known as a palindrome or an inverted-reverse sequence
Role of CRISPR
CRISPR found in bacteria and archaea genome is basically to provide immunity against foreign genetic elements such as plasmids (Barrangou et al., 2007) and phages (Marraffini and Sontheimer, 2008)
cas9
is a bacterial RNA-guided endonuclease that uses base pairing to recognize and cleave target DNAs with complementarity to the guide RNA (that is, the pairs in the DNA match the pair sequence in the guide RNA)
Nucleotide
A nucleotide is an organic molecule that is the building block of DNA and RNA. The four nitrogenous bases in DNA are adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine. (G-CAT)
G-CAT
a mnemonic for remembering the 4 bases in DNA: Guanine Cytosine Adenine Thymine
Somatic Cells
any cell of a living organism other than the reproductive cells.
Germ Cell
biological cell that gives rise to the gametes of an organism that reproduces sexually.
