Basic Terminology Flashcards
Define: Pathogenesis
The steps of pathophysiology (The steps of events involved in tissue changes related to specific disease process)
Define: Onset of disease
When and how symptoms start ( Sudden or acute / gradual or vague or mild)
Define: acute disease
short term, develops quickly
Define: chronic disease
Develops slowly, milder symptoms, often intermitted with acute episodes
Define: Subclinical state
pathologic changes with no obvious manifestations (symptoms)
Define: Latent state
No symptoms or clinical signs evident, (incubation period in infectious disease)
Define: Prodromal period
early development of the disease, signs are non-specific or absent
Define: Manifestations
Clinical evidence with signs and symptoms (local: at site of the problem Systemic: general indicators of illness (ie. fever)
Define: signs
Objective indicators of disease ( something you can measure ie. temp, BP, HR)
Define: Symptoms
Subjective feeling (ie. pain)
Define: Lesions
Specific local change in the tissue
Define: syndrome
Collection of signs and symptoms
Define: Diagnostic tests
various laboratory tests, appropriate to manifestations and medical history
Define: Remission
A period during the progress of a disease where manifestations subside
Define: Exacerbation
A period during the progress of a disease with a worsening of severity
