Epidermis
Top layer of the skin
Dermis
Layer of skin under epidermis. Contains blood vessels, sweat glands and ducts, oil glands, and hair follicles.
Adipose layer
Fat layer, below dermis
Macule
A small flat spot on the skin
Papule
A small raised spot on the skin
Patch
A large flat spot on the skin
Plaque
A large raised spot on the skin
Nodule
A small solid bump below the skin
Tumor
A large solid bump below the skin
Vesicle
Small blister on the skin surface with clear fluid inside
Bulla
Large blister on the skin surface with clear fluid inside
Postule
Pimple like spot on the skin, with yellow to white fluid inside
Scale
Flaking skin on surface area of interest
Crust
Stuck-together clumps of surface material
Excoriation
Areas that look like they have been scratched
Fissures
Cracks on the skin surface
Ulcer
An open wound that goes below the surface of the skin
Lichenification
Thickened skin that more clearly shows skin markings or lines
Atrophy
Thinner skin that usually has a more wrinkled appearance
Telangiectasia
Thin red blood vessels visible at the surface of the skin
