Native americans = Rain dance
European culture = Maypole dance, Romans, honor flora, bring SPRING

What are “performance” dances?
- takes years of training, complex movement, highly trained
- ballet tap, jazz,
Ballroom dance
- dances that were done in Balls. the Balls were held by Aristocrats, victorian era. How they socialized. (their version of bar hopping!) lead to cueing system. People that have never danced together, can.
- includes waltz, hustle, swing (Lindy hope, west coast), salsa, tango, mambo and others.
- SOCIAL dances, based on a learning system of movements and CUES a leader may use to communicate with partner who follows.
Waltz
started in early 1800s. Considered very scandalous. Now formal. Dance is very rooted in time and place,
Folk dances
traditionally Commoners dance, instead of aristocrats.
- learned informally and passed down to children
- clogging, morris dance, and square dancing
- Chain dance- done by commoners in medieval Europe. Later became popular with nobility
Dance in Asia
-kept it a singular entertainment form.
dance, drama, and opera were all together, opposed to separately as they did in the west. Because of the emphasis on honoring tradition, they keep their dances the same, very few new forms.
-done to entertain nobility.
-Eastern styles- audience can come and go as they please. can even go back stage
Dance can also serve as… (besides enjoyment)
political and social commentary.
Ex: Cake walk, african americans, they were making fun of hawty slave owners, making social statements.
How are new dance styles often formed?
they build upon or combine elements of previous dance styles. all intertwined. Tap dancing= Irish jig, clogging, all come together to a new form.
