Basic Systems Flashcards
What is the definition of a System
A system is a series of interconnecting pipes and connections that will deliver a substance from one point to another
What is a Open Loop system
A system where the working fluid is consumed
What is a closed loop system
A system where the working fluid is re-uses
Give an example of an open loop system
Fuel system, fresh water drinking system, salt water cooling system
Give an example of a closed loop system
Fresh water cooling system, lube oil system
What are the 3 Tanks and what are they used for?
Header Tank: Used a reservoir to top up a tank or system
Drain Tank: Used to collect oil returning from a system and act as a reservoir
Service Tank: Used as a reservoir of clear, water free fuel
What are the 3 Tank Gauges?
Contents Gauge
Gauge Glass
Sounding Tube
What is a strainer for?
Used to remove large course particles
What is a filter used for ?
To remove small fine particles
What determines the type of pipe work used ?
The fluid in the system
The temperature and pressure of the fluid
Types of materials in the systems
What do we use Phosphor Bronze for ?
High Pressure salt water
What do we use copper for ?
Domestic fresh water
What pipe would we use for Lube Oil
Copper Nickel
What pipe do we use for castings ?
Brass
What would we use Plastic pipes for
Sewage, waste systems and pre wet
Name 6 different Valves
Globe valve, gate valve, flap valve, relief valve, reducing valve, no return valve, control valve, rove, ball seated cock
What valve would you use to prevent over pressurisation
Relief valve
What is a reducing valve used for ?
Reduced pressure for part of a system
What valve would you use to reduce reverse flow
No return valve
What type of pump is a centrifugal
Dynamic displacement pump
Give an example of a positive displacement pump
Gear Rotary Pump, Piston Pump
What is the pressure and flow of a Dynamic Displacement Pump
High Flow, low pressure
What is the pressure and flow of a positive displacement pump
Low flow, high pressure
Name the 2 Pressure/ Vacuum Gauges
Manometer and Bourdon Tube
What do you use to measure rotational speed
Tachometer
What are the 3 types of thermometer
Clock/ Dial Face, Standard Pocket and Brass Fitted
What are the 5 things hint Thermo
Pressure / Vacuum Gauges, Thermometers, Tachometers, Flow Meters, Volt Meters
What seal would you use for a rotating shaft
Mechanical Seal
What is a Accumulator and what does it do
It is a pulsating vacuum that stores energy and releases it when required
What are the 2 categories of filters
Absorbent and Metallic
What makes up a metallic filter
Metal Wire, Wire Mesh, steel wool
What makes up absorbent filters
Paper, wool, sponge
