Basic Structures of the Digestive System Flashcards
Mouth
-tongue and teeth are accessory organs
-tongue helps mix food with saliva and gathers chewed food into ball called the bolus
Saliva
-contains lysozymes to protect against bacteria
-Amylase: enzymes that starts chemical breakdown of complex carbohydrates
What is scientific name for chewing and swallowing
-mastication
-deglutition
Pharynx
-throat
-receives food from mouth
Esophagus
-uses peristalsis (rhythmic contractions) to move bolus down to stomach
-upper and lower esophageal sphincter are valves
-Heartburn or reflux is when lower value allows food mixed with stomach acid to come back up the esophagus
Stomach
-has folds called rugae that increase surface area and help break down food mechanically
Parietal cells of stomach
make HCL or hydrochloric acid
-acid helps break down food and protect from pathogens that were ingested in food
Goblet cells of stomach
produce mucus to mix with food and protect the stomach lining from HCL
Chief cells of stomach
secrete enzyme pepsinogen that makes pepsin which break down protein into peptides
Chyme
mix of partially digested food, water, and gastric juice
Pyloric sphincter
valve at the end of stomach that release a little bit of chyme into the duodenum
Duodenum
-main site for chemical digestion
What does the gallbladder release to help with digestion?
bile from the bile duct
What does the pancreas release to help with digestion?
-pancreatic juice
-sodium bicarbonate to help neutralize the stomach
What is in pancreatic juice?
-amylase for starch
-peptidases and trypsin for proteins
-lipases for fat
-nucleases for nucleic acids
