BASIC STRUCTURE - Skin Flashcards
EPIDERMIS
- the superficial part of the skin
- stratified epithelial tissue that flattens as the mature and rise to the surface
- epidermis is thick at palms of the hand and soles of the feet to withstand the wears and tears at these regions
dermis
- deep part of the skin
- dense connective tissue
- cntains many blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves
- variation of thickness throught the body but mostly thinner on the anterior and thicker on the posterior part
- thinner in women compared to men
subcutaneous tissue
- the deepest layer of skin
- also known as superficial fascia as it blends the reticular dermis with the bones
skin creases
the site where skin over bones fold
nails
keratinized plates on the dorsal tips of the fingers and toes
root of the nail
proximal edge of the nail
nail bed
surface of skin covered by the nail
HAIR
protein filament that grows out of follicles
follicle
invagination of epidermis into the dermis also helps in secretion of the sebaceous glands
hair bulb
extreme end of the hair follicle, has a concave end and the concavity is occupied by hair pappila
arrector pilli
connects the undersurface of the hairbul t the superficial surface of the dermis
gooseflesh
pull of the muscle also causes dimpling of the skin. (goosebumps)
sebaceous gland
secretes sebum and is located in the undersurface of the follicle within the dermis
sebum
oily material that helps preserve the emerging hair
sweat glands
- long, spiral, tubular glands distributed
over the surface of the body, except on the red margins of the lips, the nail beds, and the glans penis and clitoris
-extend through the full thickness of
the dermis, and their extremities may lie in the superficial
fascia - sweat glands are therefore the most deeply penetrating structures of all the epidermal appendages
