Basic Signs Flashcards
Play
To sign play, take both hands and extend your pinkie fingers and thumbs, while keeping the rest of your fingers tucked in. Holding the two hands out with palms facing you, shimmy them around a little by twisting them back and forth.
Yes
The yes sign looks a head nodding yes. You take your hand and make it into a fist, holding it at about shoulder height and make your fist bob back and forth.
No
The sign for no is like that scolding teacher in high school that always says no to everything. The sign looks like a mouth saying no. Take your index finger together with your middle finger and tap them together with your thumb.
Drink
The sign for drink looks just like you are holding and drinking from an imaginary cup. To sign cup, make your hand into a c-shape as if holding a cup in your hand. Take your hand up to your mouth as if drinking from the cup.
Eat
Make the sign for eat by taking you strong hand, with the tip of your thumb touching the tips of your fingers and tapping it on your mouth. (The universal sign for eating) The same sign is used for food.
Up
The sign for up is made by taking your index finger and aiming it skyward. Raise and lower your arm so it is like you are pointing up at the sky.
On
To sign on, start with your weak hand horizontal and your strong hand at a right angle. Lower the strong hand so that it becomes flat on top of the weak hand.
Go
Book
To sign book, put your hands together, palm-to-palm. Then holding your pinkies together, open up your hands as if opening up a book.
Slide
Swing
The swing sign looks two legs on a swing going back and forth. On your weak hand, extend your middle and index finger. Hook your middle and index finger over the fingers on your weak hand. Then move your hands back and forth.
All Done
For all-done we usually do the ASL sign for finished because it is a little simpler. You start with palms facing in, then turn the hands so that they are facing out.
Light
To sign light, take your strong hand and raise above and to the side of your head. Take your fingers from being extended and together to extended outward. The sign looks like a light is flicking on, spreading out it’s rays.
Please
To sign please, take you hand with fingers extended and all together, and thumb extended and sticking out. Take the hand with palm facing in and rub it in a circle on your chest.
Thank You
To sign thank you, extend your fingers and thumb. Touch you fingers to your chin and bring your fingers forward. It is almost like you are blowing a kiss out, to thank the person – but the sign is a bit lower.
