Basic Rules of Library Design Flashcards
Rule #1
Keep Space Flexible
Libraries move things/collections all the time. Spaces should be design to accomodate several potential uses. Outlets everywhere. Store rooms in abundance.
Rule #2
Design for Security
Sightlines for staff & security are all-important. Minimize entrances/exits for the public (1 is perfect). Consider [natural] disasters.
Rule #3
Bright but low-glare lighting
Have plenty of light (natural or otherwise) and just as many ways to adjust or block it.
Rule #4
Make library users comfortable
Comfortable seating, plenty of space, cozy areas, easy exits - make it welcoming, a place to stay for hours.
Rule #5
Keep libraries accessible
Accessibility benefits everyone
Rule #6
Keep things simple
Easy-to-navigate floorplans, easy to understand collections, intuitive help and layouts.
Rule #7
Plan for growth
You will always need more space in the future - programs, collections, staff, everything.
Rule #8
Never lose control
Libraries are run by librarians, not architects.
