Basic Rules of Facilitation Flashcards
Basic Rule 1
It’s always about the learners!
Basic Rule 2
The selection of delivery type is a design and development issue; learners’ needs, among other factors, must be considered. Facilitators can use the same skills for blended and virtual training as they do in face to face training.
Basic Rule 3
Facilitation is learner centered, whether face to face online on in the virtual classroom. In contrast, presentations are presenter centered.
Basic Rule 4
Use multiple forms of media and learning strategies to support learners’ taking in of content.
Basic Rule 5
Facilitate both the task and process of leaning experiences.
Basic Rule 6
As leader, you help participants learn and apply the new knowledge and skills to their jobs.
Basic Rule 7
Manage and maintain your agenda.
Basic Rule 8
Always maintain a positive and professional demeanor and model the behavior you are teaching.
Basic Rule 9
Demonstrate mastery of the subject, in both content and application to the job regardless of the learning environment.
Basic Rule 10
Consult with learners to clarify content and help them apply that content to their jobs, within their environment.
Basic Rule 11
Know as much as you can about your learner audience.
Basic Rule 12
Find out the true usability of a room before delivery.
Basic Rule 13
Be sure the room is wide enough to accommodate a U shaped setup.
Basic Rule 14
Your room setup should support learning and accommodate the size of the room.
Basic Rule 15
Always greet learners as they arrive. Plan to finish preparation work 10 to 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Basic Rule 16
Model the energy level that you want to create in the learners.
Basic Rule 17
Begin a learning event with an activity.
Basic Rule 18
Don’t “wing it” when it comes to stories and examples. Plan ahead: make sure the stories and examples are aligned with the learning objectives and rehearse them so they flow smoothly.
Basic Rule 19
With humor, when in doubt, DON’T.
Basic Rule 20
Use your unique talents and skills to personalize and enhance learning.
Basic Rule 21
Almost any type of structured exercise you can use in the face to face classroom can be incorporated into a virtual classroom environment.
Basic Rule 22
All learning activities must support appropriate learning objectives.
Basic Rule 23
Know the knowledge and experience levels of your audience.
Basic Rule 24
Sequence learning activities to maximize learning and involvement for face to face and virtual classroom learning environments.
Basic Rule 25
Present complete and specific instructions for all learning activities.
Basic Rule 26
Don’t sacrifice skill practice when making time adjustments.
Basic Rule 27
Manage your time to maximize learning; structure the time for online learners’ deliverables and feedback.
Basic Rule 28
Align group sizes with the learning activity and course schedule.
Basic Rule 29
Develop group composition that maximizes attainment of learning objectives and reinforces learning.
Basic Rule 30
Continue in your role of facilitator by monitoring while participants are engaged in activities, which may include using technology in the monitoring effort.
Basic Rule 31
The type of test or assessment must align with the learning objectives.
Basic Rule 32
Feedback, tests and assessments can be part of learning activities.
Basic Rule 33
Plan ahead to adjust on the fly to maintain content and make learning happen.
Basic Rule 34
Learners behave in a way that disrupts learning to fulfill an individual need or agenda.
Basic Rule 35
The facilitators behavior must make learning happen.
Basic Rule 36
Learning is about the content, activities and eventual job performance. Not about the media.
Basic Rule 37
The medial must relate to and support the learning.
Basic Rule 38
Media must support the desired amount of facilitator movement.
Basic Rule 39
Media should encourage as much learner interactivity as is appropriate for the learning activity at hand.
Basic Rule 40
Don’t use just one or two types of media. Use a variety of media in one module or setting.
Basic Rule 41
Always have a media backup plan.
Basic Rule 42
If you are not going to act on the feedback don’t solicit it.
Basic Rule 43
In general, verbal feedback doesn’t provide reliable or useful information.
Basic Rule 44
Learner feedback on how well course objectives were met provides insights into the quality of facilitation.
