Before you rescue someone what do you do?
Check for hazards, no glass, no gas, no fires, no wires
What are the goals of protective barriers
To protect you and the victim from each other
What are the first three steps of the ladder approach?
Talk-Encourage the victim to get to safety
Throw-throw a buoyant aid to the victim
Reach-extend a rescue object and pull the victim to safety
What are the next 3 steps in the ladder approach
Wade- walk through the water and extend a rescue aid and bring the victim back
Row-use a watercraft and row to the victim until you can extend a rescue aid
Swim-swim to the victim and give them a buoyant aid
What are the last two steps in the ladder approach
Tow- if the victim is unable to go to a safe location without additional help, tow them by pulling an object they are hanging on to
Carry- swim to the victim and carry them to safety
What do you need to keep in mind during cpr?
Fast and hard, allow the chest to fully recoil, minimize interruptions between compressions, 100-120 bpm, 5-6 cm deep
What is the secondary assessment?
A secondary assessment happens after the main issue is dealt with. It is used to identify other injuries or medical issues that may not be clear at first. It also gives clarity into the main issue.
How do you perform the secondary assessment?
Check all of SAMPLE
S-signs and symptoms
A-allergies, do they have any?
M-medications, do they need any?
P-Past medical history, has this happened before?
L- last oral intake
E- events prior
