Basic rate of reactions Flashcards
Signs of chemical reaction?
• Solid forms (a precipitate)
• Colour change/Change in pH
• Temperature Change
• Gas produces
What is a catalyst?
• It changes the rate of reaction.
• Is never used up
What happens when the concentration is increased/decreased?
• Higher concentration = faster reaction
• Lower concentration = slower reaction
What happens when temperature is increased/decreased?
• High temp = fast reaction
• Low temp = slow reaction
Explain why a higher concentration = faster reaction.
Higher concentration = more particles moving = more collisions = reaction rate increased.
Is powder faster than lumps?
Yes, powder = more surface area, decreased particle size = faster reaction.
Big/Small particle size = ?
Big = Slow reaction, less surface area, less chance of collision.
Small = Fast reaction, bigger surface area, more chance of collision.

Formula
2 piece of equipment to measure the volume of gas?
• Gas syringe
• Measuring cylinder
Why is a gradient on a graph usually faster at the start of a reaction?
• Reactants gets used up as the reaction goes on therefore the gradient would become less steep over time
