Basic Procedures

Question 1

Normal Start

Answer 1

1. Key in, switch to both.
2. Mixture full rich
3. Open 1/4 inch
4. Prime
5. Battery on
6. Clear?
7. Start engine
8. Carb heat on
9. Lean mixture one inch
10. Carb heat off
11. Oil pressure
12. Alternator on, check low voltage off, indicator positive charge

Question 2

Pre-Taxi

Answer 2

1. Avionics master on
2. Ensure all is stowed, headset on floor, enter ATIS AWOS/ASOS on speaker
3. Repeat phonetic ATIS three times
4. Confirm Kollsman window barometric pressure
5. Note temp and dew point spread, if less than five what time of day

Question 3

ELTs and Guard

Answer 3

1. Tune Comm 2 to ELT
2. Squelch off to see if ELT sweep is heard
3. Set to “receive only”

Question 4

First Radio Communication

Answer 4

1. Ensure ground and tower is dialed in
2. Squelch off to check volume
3. Think about what is going to be said and practice out loud
4. Call in
5. Repeat back exactly what is said
   6.

Question 5

Lighting

Answer 5

1. Turn beacon on before engine start
2. NAV light turned on after start
3. Strobe and anti collision only before takeoff

Taxi

Answer 6

1. Add power, enrichen mixture if over 1000 RPM
2. Hold yoke back
3. Touch breaks
4. S-turn to confirm DG, TC, ball work
5. park 45 degrees to runway

Question 7

Pre-takeoff

1. Set parking break
2. Switch to tower, squelch off
3. Read the book, check radio, check panel light, check fuel etc.
4. Check flap operation
5. Check controls are free and clear
6. Check ailerons, rudder etc.

Run-Up

1. Close windows and look behind you
2. Mixture full rich
3. 1700 RPM
4. Check magnetos
5. Carb heat on/off
6. Check engine gauges
7. Fuel levels
8. Amp charging, pressure gauge green
9. Reduce power, lean mixture
10. Put on headset, turn off speaker
11. Check frequency again
