Basic Pharmaceutica/terms/informatiln Flashcards
Absorption
Involves transport of drug across biologic membranes (skin, mucous membranes, stomach/intestinal lining, sub q or muscle tissue etc) to reach target tissue
Adverse Effects
More severe side effects that may justify the discontinuation of a drug
Affinity
(attraction) ability of drug to bind tonreceptor; lock and key theory
Agonist
Compound that binds to specific receptor and stimulates biologic response; had affinity and efficacy
Antagonist
Prevents stimulation of receptors; has affinity for specific receptors, but lacks efficacy (Narcan, given for OD due to increased affinity for narcotic receptors)
Bioavailability
Portion of drug available to produce systematic effects
Biotransformation
Breakdown/metabolism of drug
Controlled Substance Act of 1970
Repealed almost 50 other laws written since 1914 that relate to the control of drugs. The new law is designed to improve the administration and regulation of controlled substances
(Schedule i, ii, iii, iv, v)
Schedule I
High potential for abuse, with no current accepted medical use
Schedule II
High potential for abuse, with current accepted medical use
Schedule III
High potential for abuse but less than Schedule I and II
