Basic Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Explain how fractional distillation works
Crude oil is heated in the distillation column. Hydrocarbon chains of different lengths evaporate at different temperatures, meaning you can separate the crude oil by cooling and condensing the vapour at different temperatures
Name the alkanes with 1-4 carbons
1 - methane
2 - ethane
3 - propane
4 - butane
Name the alkenes with 2-3 carbons
2 - ethene
3 - propene
Describe the reaction between ethene and hydrogen
ethene + hydrogen -> ethane
Reaction uses a nickel catalyst at a high pressure. The C=C breaks into two single bonds which attach to the two hydrogens.
Describe the reaction between ethene and bromine
ethene + bromine -> dibromoethane
The C=C bond breaks to attach to the to bromines.
