Basic Oral Histology Flashcards
1
Q
Is Oral Mucosa made up of keratinised or non-keratinised epithelium?
A
Both!!
Keratinised epithelium in the mouth: palate, gingiva, dorsal sulcus of tongue
Everything else is non-keratinised
2
Q
What are the layers in the non-keratinised oral mucosa?
A
From top:
1. Superficial layer
2. Intermediate layer
3. Basal layer
(Lamina propria underneath)
3
Q
Layers in keratinised oral mucosa?
A
- Corneal layer (keratin layer)
- Granular layer
- Spinous layer
- Basal layer
4
Q
What are the 2 types of keratinised oral mucosa?
A
- Ortho-keratinised (thin corneal layer)
- Para-keratinised (thick corneal layer)
5
Q
What are rete ridges?
A
Epithelial projections into lamina propria
