Basic Ops/M9/M60 Flashcards
8 Cycles of Operation
Feeding Chambering Locking Firing Unlocking Extracting Ejecting Cocking
Feeding Mechanisms
Magazines
Belts
Clips
Types of Magazines
Staggered Box
— Rounds staggered side by side
In Line Box
— Rounds are one on top of other
Drum
— Circular, multiple rows of cartridges. May attach to top or bottom
Pan
— Cartridges are perpendicular to the axis of rotation, usually mounted on top of the weapon
Belts
Split Link Disintegrating Metallic Link Belt (SLD MLB)
Split Link Non-Disintegrating Metallic Link Belt (SLND MLB)
Fully Encased Disintegrating Metallic Link Belt (FED MLB)
Fully Encased Non-Disintegrating Metallic Link Belt (FEND MLB)
Clips
Used to rapidly load a weapon
•En Bloc
• Stripper Clip
5 Types of Cartridges
Rimmed
• Cartridge head larger in diameter than the body forming a rim or flange
Semi-Rimmed
• A cartridge that has a head slightly larger in diameter than the body, with a shallow groove machined around the circumference of the body forward of the head to provide an extractor gripping surface
Rimless
• Head is the same diameter of the of body w/ a groove machined around the circumference of the body to provide an extractor gripping surface
Belted
• Rimless type, thick band or belt around the body just forward of the extractor groove to provide greater strength in that portion of the case
Rebated
• Base smaller than the case
5 Firing Pins
Free Floating
• Larger Mass strikes firing pin, no spring used forward or rearward movement of firing pin
Inertia
• Forward energy is created when the hammer strikes firing pin. Pin driven forward by hammer, spring compresses creating energy needed to reset the firing pin
Percussion
• Firing pin driven forward by force of a compressed spring and retracted by cam action that cocks weapon
Striker
• Squeeze cocking system is what compresses firing pin spring
Fixed
• Own mass provides the energy
Types of Primers
Boxer
• One flash hole, anvil is built in
Berdan
• Two flash holes, only contains flash powder, anvil is a part of cartridge case
Locking Systems
- Rotating bolt
- Rising/Lowering bolt
- Roller
- Rising barrel
- Locking flaps
- Swinging bolt
- Locking block
- Rotating barrel
Operating Systems
- Bolt action
- Blowback (no locking system)
- Delayed blowback (locking system)
- Recoil
- Recoil w/ gas assist
- Gas operation
- Manual pump
- Revolving cylinder
Battle Sight
Range that allows you to hit between the throat and waist without sight adjustment
Accelerator
Increases speed at which certain parts move, when the rate of movement of the bolt or breechblock is increased - rate of fire is increased
Ballistics
Study of motion and impact of projectiles
Internal
• what happens when primer ignited and the bullet leaves the barrel
External
• path of bullet from muzzle to target
Terminal
• concerns after bullet hits target and what the bullet does upon impact
Barrel
Portion of weapon which a projectile is propelled by gases generated from burning propellant charge
Bolt
Main function is to support the base of the cartridge and seal the chamber when the cartridge is fired
Bolt Carrier
Carries bolt; contains grooves, cams, or lugs that assist in locking the bolt in the forward position during firing
Breech
Outside rear face of barrel which meets face of bolt
Breechblock
Seals the breech and blocks gases from the fires cartridge forming exiting to the rear of the chamber
Buffer
Absorb shock of moving parts or check motion of major components during recoil or counter recoil
Caliber
Distance across bore of a weapon, measured from land to land, expressed in hundredths of an inch
Chamber
Unrifled portion of the bore at the rear end of the barrel that receives and supports the cartridge when the breech is closed
Compensator
Allows gases following bullet out of the muzzle to be deflected upward through slots in the top surface
Disconnector
Prevents firing of more than one shot for one pull of the trigger or prevents weapon from being fired until it is in battery
Flash suppressor
Cools gases as it leaves the muzzle reducing flash
Headspace
Distance from breechblock to part of the chamber which stops the forward movement of the cartridge case
Muzzle brake
Pulls weapon forward offsetting some of the rearward motion of recoil; gases direct out the sides and back
Sear
Component retained under spring tension that releases either a firing pin, hammer, or bolt
Trigger
Finger actuated lever used to activate the firing mechanism firing the weapon
Trigger bar
Connecting bar operating between the trigger and the sear (extension of the trigger)
