Basic Nursing Skills & Nutrition and Hygeine Flashcards
The absence of breathing
Apnea
Can be a digital device that takes vital signs, including BP, or a manual one that requires a stethoscope
Sphygmomanometer
A tube that can be placed into the stomach throughthe abdominal wall
Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Tube
Contains, urine, feces and vomitus. Everything must be eliminated
Output
Difficulty breathing
Dyspnea
A warm soak of the perineal area to clean perineal wounds and reduce inflammation and pain
Sitz bath
The surgically- created opening into the stomach that allows the insertion of a tube called:
Gastrostomy
Maintaining equal input and output
Fluid Balance
Normal breathing
Eupnea
The process in which medication, nutrition, of fluids is delivered through a vein
Intravenous Therapy (IV)
List the residents name and information about special diets, allergies, likes and dislikes and other dietary instructions
Diet Cards
Nothing by mouth is a medical instruction meaning to withhold food and fluids.
NPO “nil per os” (Latin phrase that translates literally to English as “nothing through the mouth”)
Shortness of breath when lying down but is relieved by sitting up
Orthopnea
The administration of oxygen to increase the supply of oxygen to the lungs
Oxygen Therapy
A therapeutic diet is usually a modification of a regular diet. It is a meal plan that controls the intake of certain foods or nutrients
Therapeutic Diet
A serious condition resulting from not having enough fluid in the body
Dehydration
Constant high blood pressure. BP over 140/90 is considered high
Hypertension
Found in sugars, sweets, syrups and jellies. Simple Carbohydrates do not have the same nutritional value as Complex Carbohydrates have
Simple Carbohydrates
Inhaling food, fluid or foreign material into the lungs
Aspiration
The process of inhaling air into your lungs
Inspiration
Blood pressure that is low, less then 90/60
Hypotension
When the digestive system does not function properly
Parenteral Nutrition (PN)
The fluid a person consumes
Intake
The process of exhaling air out of the lungs
Expiration
The fluid a person consumes
Input
If BP is between 120/80 and 139/89. This means that the person does not have high BP now but is likely to develop in the future
Prehypertension
Tube inserted into the nose and goes down into the stomach
Nasogastric Tube
Is how the body uses food to maintain health
Nutrition
Medications that reduce fluid volume in the body
Diuretics
Heard by listening directly over the heart with a stethoscope
Apical Pulse
Top number of the BP reading. The heart is at work, contacting and pushing the blood from the left ventricle of the heart. The reading shows the pressure on the walls of the arteries as blood is pumped through the body. The normal range for this is 120 mm hg
Systolic
A necessary substance that provides energy, promotes growth and health and helps regulate metabolism
Nutrient
To blend food or grind it into a thick paste of baby food consistancy
Puree
instrument designed to listen to sounds within the body such as, the heart beating or air moving in the lungs
Stethoscope
Bottom number of the reading. This is when the heart relaxes, it shows the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest. The normal range for this is 80 mm hg
Diastolic
Found in bread, cereal, potatoes rice, pasta, veggies and fruit
Complex Carbohydrates
difficulty swallowing
Dysphagia
Process of inhaling air into the lungs
Respiration
Measuring the body temp, Counting the pulse rate, o2 levels, Counting for respiration’s, Measuring blood pressure and observing and reporting the level of pain
Vital Signs
Rapid breathing
Tachypnea
Piece of plastic tubing that fits around the face and is secured by a strap that goes over the ears and around the back of the head. The face piece has 2 short prongs that fit inside the nose and oxygen is delivered to them as they breathe
Nasal Cannula
REsidents who have certain illness’s may be placed on:
Modified Diet
Inside of wrist
Radial Pulse
Slow breathing
Bradypnea
Box like device that changes air in the room into air with more oxygen.
Oxygen Concentrator
low-calorie diets, diabetic diets, low carbohydrate diets and low-fat diet
Special Diet
Pulse inside of the elbow
Brachial Pulse
Alternating periods of slow, irregular breathing and rapid, shallow breathing along with short periods of apnea
Cheyne-Stokes
