Basic Navigation Flashcards
ETP is used for:
The formula to calculate ETP is:
The EQUI-TIME POINT (also called CRITICAL POINT) is the point along a given route segment from which it will take the same time to go on or to return to starting point.
Once it has been calculated it must be considered in an emergency. If an emergency occurs before ETP it will be faster to return to departure point and visa versa.
ETP = Total distance x GS home / TASx2
What is PNR?
What’s its formula?
The POINT OF NO RETURN is the maximum distance an aircraft can proceed in a given direction from its take off point before it becomes impossible to for it to return WITH all fuel reserves intact.
It is governed by how much fuel is on board at start up.
PNR = Safe Endurance x GS home / TASx2
What is margin fuel?
Fuel additional to minimum fuel.
Lines cutting the earth in two from both true poles are called:
Meridians of longitude
Cutting the earth into horizontal lines from the equator (getting smaller the closer we get to the poles) are called:
Parallels of latitude
The prime meridian passes through….
Greenwich, London
The difference between true north and the direction of the earth’s magnetic field at any location is called __________ __________.
Regular surveys are conducted to find what this is at any point and that value is indicated on a map as a dashed line called a ___________.
magnetic variation
isogonal
Magnetic error is a plane due to components is called ________.
deviation
A nautical mile is _____ ________ of latitude.
Why isn’t it a measure between meridians of longitude ?
one minute
The distance between two lines of longitude are not constant, parallels of latitude are.
If the direct track [°T] from Caboolture to Monto is 323°T and the magnetic variation variation is 10°E, the magnetic track is:
313°M
Two towns are on the same meridian. One is on 23°S latitude, while the other is on 25°S latitude. The distance between these two towns is ?
(in nm)
120 nm
