Trio
1) Sonata for three instruments
2) the second large division of a minuet, scherzo or march, after which the first part is repeated.
Retransition
A transition, or bridge, which occurs as the final event in a development section.
Its purpose is to prepare for the re-entry of the main theme in the principal key.
Rigaudon
An old dance in duple meter; originating in southern France.
Occasionally used in the suite or as an independent piece.
Rondo
A large form made by the contrast of a main theme with one or more contrasting, subordinate themes.
Sarabande
A classic dance of Spanish origin in slow 3/4 or 3/2 measure, with the second beat accented, or lengthened.
Typically mvmt 3 of the four principal suite mvmts (ACSG)
Scherzo
Italian for “joke”
Typically found as a movement in a sonata, symphony, quartet or similar. In a triple meter at a fast tempo.
Sonata-Allegro
A large form used as the first movement of sonatas, symphonies, quartets and similar genres.
Formed by the presentation of two contrasting themes which are developed and then reconciled.

Canon
A composition for two or more voice-parts, in which each part presents the identical melody (subject) in turn, exactly as presented by the first part.
The strictest of the contrapuntal genres.
Cantata
Sacred or secular work for soloists, chorus and orchestra telling a dramatic story. Not acted out as in an opera or oratorio.
Capriccio (Caprice)
A fanciful and irregular sort of composition written in free style, resembling the fantasia.
Arioso
A style of solo song in opera or oratorio combining elements of the recitative and aria.
Common in Wagner’s music dramas
Bagatelle
Literally, a trifle
Short piano pieces in song form.
Concerto Grosso
Originated in the 17th century
A small group of solo instruments (the concertino) is set against a larger body of accompanying instruments (ripieno).
Courante
A classical dance, of French origin, in rapid tempo usually in 3 or 6/4 time with an upbeat of a quarter notes.
Part of the traditional suite, typically the second movement. (ACSG)
Duo, Trio…Sextet
A piece for a specific number of instruments (identified by the title) in which all parts coordinate and are of substantially equal importance.
