what are the steps in checking wether somebody is having a cardiac arrest?
Danger, Response, Shout, Airway, Breathing, Circulation
if somebody is unresponsive and not breathing what do you do?
. Call 999, ask for ambulance, must say cardiac arrest
. 30 chest compressions, 2 rescue breaths
. continue CPR
. once AED arrives follow instructions
how do you check for a response in the victim?
shake them gently and shout in both ears
How do you check the victims airway?
. use head tilt, chin lift or jaw thrust
. tilt head back to ensure nothing is blocking airway, if obstruction easily removed then remove it if not leave it
how do you check the victims breathing?
look listen and feel for normal breathing, hover cheek over mouth and look down chest, ignore agonal breathing
what is agonal breathing?
infrequent gasps
how do you check the victims pulse?
check carotid pulse in neck
when dealing 999 which details must you give?
cardiac arrest, contact number and location
how dead must compressions be?
5-6cm
how many compressions per min?
100-120
what does AED stand for?
automated external defibrillator
what must you do when AED arrives?
turn on, attach electrode pads and follow instructions
what must you do if shock is indicated?
tell everyone to stand clear, look to check everybody is clear, move oxygen 1 metre away, press to deliver shock
if no shock is indicated on the AED, what must you do?
continue CPR
what is the name for airway adjuncts?
oropharyngeal airway
what does OPA stand for?
oropharyngeal airway
how is an OPA inserted?
insert upside down till you hit back of mouth then turn 180 degrees, measure agains jaw angle to mouth
what does ROSC stand for?
return of spontaneous circulation
what must you do if ROSC occurs?
lateral/recovery position, reassure casualty, maintain airway, do not remove AED pads, reassess ABC
what does CPR stand for?
cardiopulmonary rescuscitation
what does BLS stand for?
basic life support
