basic life support Flashcards
chest compression depth
1/2-1/3rd of width of chest
position for chest compressions
lateral in most, barrel chested breeds in dorsal recumbency
hand position for chest compressions in large and giant breed dogs
widest portion of the chest
hand position for chest compressions in keel-chested dogs
directly over the heart
hand position for chest compressions in cats and small dogs
circumferential compressions rather than lateral compressions may be considered
chest compression rate
100-120 compressions/minute, independent of size
degree of recoil allowed between compressions
full chest wall recoil between compressions, avoid leaning on the chest during recoil
C:V ratio in non-intubated dogs and cats or single rescuer CPR
30:2
recommended ventilation rate, tidal volume and inspiratory time
10bpm, Vt 10ml/kg, insp time 1s
frequency of rotation of chest compressors - why?
every 2 minutes - reduces lean, compromise of compression efficacy due to fatigue
should you confirm death before starting CPR? why?
no - aggressive administration of CPR in patients suspected of being in CPA is recommended. risk of injury due to CPR in patients not in CPA is low.
