basic/intro to physiology Flashcards
what is physiology
the study of the normal function of the human body and the mechanisms that control them
what is meant by the term tissue and name a few examples
tissue is a group of cells with similar structure and a specialised function, eg muscle, nervous, connective
what is meant by the term body organ and name a few examples
body organs are made up of two or more primary tissue types that function together to perform a particular function(s), eg the heart, lungs, kidney
what is meant by the term body systems and name a few examples
a body system is made up of group of body organs that perform related functions and work together, eg cardiovascular system
explain the concept of homeostasis and why it is so important
homeostasis is the need for a stable environment within the body is essential in order for all the body systems and organs to function properly
name examples of components of the body’s internal environment that must be kept within a narrow range
pH, temp., pressures, volumes, 02 + CO2 conc., conc. of waste products, conc. of nutrients
define the term homeostasis
the maintenance of steady states within our bodies by coordinated physiological mechanisms
why is physiological knowledge important
it is essential for the understanding of patient conditions, provides rational for patient investigations, treatment and health promotion
outline the physiology of the cell membrane
much of the physiological control occurs at the level of the cell membrane. Changes in membrane potential is central to the functionality of nerve and muscle tissue, as well as many pharmacological agents working at cell level
outline the physiology of control systems
they are important to maintaining homeostasis and also have close relation with pharmacological agents
