Basic Intraoral Anatomyof the Head, Neck, and Face Flashcards
Floor of Nasal Cavity
Wall of dense cortical bone that forms the floor of the nasal cavity. (Appears radiopaque on maxillary incisor)
Superior Foramina of the Incisive Canal
Two tiny openings in bone located on the floor of the nasal cavity, join to form the incisive canal. (Appears radiolucent on maxillary incisor periapical)
Alveolar Ridge
Bony ridge that contains alveoli (tooth sockets). (Appears radiopaque)
Alveolar Process
Upper aspect of the body of the mandible. (Appears radiopaque)
Mental Ridge
Chin.
Mental Foramen
Small opening in bone (circle, dot) on the external mandible throughout which blood vessels and nerves supplying the lower lip pass, appears as a small area (RADIOLUCENT) area on the mandibular premolar.
Internal Oblique Ridge
Down and forward from the ramus to the third molar region or to the mylohyoid ridge. (Appears as a radiopaque band that may run parallel on the external oblique ridge on the mandibular.)
Maxillary Tuberosity
Round prominence of bone on the alveolar ridge through which blood vessels and nerves enter the Maxilla. (Appears radiopaque on maxillary molar periapical.)
Zygomatic Process of the Maxilla
Process of the temporal bone that attaches to the cheek bone to form the zygomatic arch outer portion of the cheek prominence. (Appears radiopaque)
Coronoid Process
Thin prominence of the bone projecting from the anterior ramus. (Appears radiopaque triangle below the maxillary tuberosity of maxillary molar.
Zygoma
Cheek bone. (Appears radiopaque bands on maxillary posterior)
Nasal Septum
Cartilage dividing the right and left nasal fossa. (Appears radiopaque)
Anterior Nasal Spine
Triangle projection from the floor of the nasal fossa.
Lateral Fossa/Canine Fossa
Slightly concave area in bone located below and between the maxillary lateral incisors and the maxillary canine. (Appears radiolucent)
Mental Fossa
Depressed area of bone on the external surface of the mandible. (Appears radiolucent above metal ridge)
Inferior Nasal Conchae
Thin scrolled bony extensions of the nasal fossa wall. (Appears radiopaque on maxillary incisor)
Nasal Fossa
Large open compartment of the bone located above the maxilla, divided by nasal septum.
Humulus/Humular Process
Small hook shaped portion of bone extending from the sphenoid bone down and located behind the maxillary tuberosity region. (Appears radiopaque)
Incisive Foramen
Located at the midline of the anterior hard palate-behind central incisors.
Lingual Foramen
Small opening located in the midline of the internal aspect of the mandible. (Appears as a small radiolucent dot in the center of the radiopaque)
Mylohyoid Ridge
Bony linear projection found on inner surface of mandible extending downward from the ramus and ending near the apices of the mandibular molars.
Submandibular Fossa
Depression in the bone and on lingual side of the mandible.
Maxilla
Two bones that form the upper jaw. The upper teeth are located in the alveolar process on the maxilla. (Appears radiopaque)
Inner and Outer Table
Inner and outer layers of the skull that protects the brain.
Ramus
Two vertical portions of the mandible which are perpendicular to the body of the mandible, (Appears radiopaque)
Body
Curved horizontal part of the mandible that extends from one ramus to another. (Appears radiopaque)
Mandible
Single bone which makes up the lower jaw and made of the ramus, the body, and alveolar process of the mandible. (Appears radiopaque)
Frontal Bone
Forehead
Zygoma
Cheek bones
Orbit
Eye cavity
Mandibular Canal
Canal within the mandible that contains the inferior alveolar nerve, inferior alveolar artery and inferior alveolar vein.
Maxillary Sinus
One of the four paranasal sinuses located near the nose. Located below cheeks, above the teeth.
The TMJ connects the _______ to the _______ _______ on the side of the head.
Mandible, to the temporal bone.
