Basic information Flashcards
Define a Hernia
“an abnormal protrusion of an organ or organs through a physiological opening in the lining of the cavity in which it is normally enclosed”
Name 3 sections of normal hernia anatomy
- The hernial ring
- The hernia contents
- The hernial sac, lined with the peritoneum
What is a ruptured hernia?
A rupture is “the pathological tear in the lining/wall of the cavity, through which enclosed organs may protrude”
Name the 4 hernia classifications?
- Congenital Or Acquired
- True or False
- Location
- Reducible, irreducible/ incarcerated or strangulated
What is a congenital or acquired hernia?
A congenital hernia is one that is present at birth e.g. - umbilical hernia (true hernia). An acquired hernia is one that is obtained through trauma or degeneration e.g. Diaphragmatic hernia (false hernias)
Give an example of a congenital hernia
umbilical hernia
Give an example of a acquired hernia?
Diaphragmatic hernia
What is a true or false hernia
A true hernia is when the hernia has a lining. E.g. An abdominal hernia has the peritoneum as the lining. A false hernia is when the hernia does not have a lining, this is usually due to a rupture.
Give an example of a true hernia
An abdominal hernia has the peritoneum as the lining.
Give an example of a false hernia
A hernia that doesnt have a lining,
What is a location hernia?
Hernias are referred to by their location e.g. Umbilical, Abdominal, Inguinal, Diaphragmatic, Perineal etc
What is a reducible hernia?
Reducible: This means that the contents of the hernia can be replaced back into their original location.
What is an irreducible/ incarcerated hernia?
Irreducible/Incarcerated: This means the contents of the hernia cannot be placed back into their original location.
What is a strangulated hernia?
Strangulated: These are surgical emergencies. This is when the blood supply of the hernia is compromised due to entrapment, caused by torsion or compression at the hernial ring. The hernia becomes quickly devitalised which can be life threatening for the patient. Animals with a strangulated hernia often present in pain.
What are the surgical options?
herniorrhaphy
