Noun
A word used to name a person, animal, place or thing, e.g. mouse, ball, car
Proper Noun
The name of a particular person, place or thing, e.g Edinburgh, or Papa
Adjective
A word used to describe a noun or pronoun, e.g. shiny, new, red
Verb
A word that describes an action or a state of being, a “doing word”, e.g. run, think, go, play
Adverb
A word that describes and adds information to a verb or verb phrase, e.g. quickly, soon, very, too
Pronoun
A word that takes the place of a noun, e.g. he, she, it, they
Preposition
A word that indicates the relationship between two people or things, usually in terms of where they are, e.g. with, under, on, over
Conjunction
A word used to link words and clauses, e.g. and, but, so, or, neither, because
Interjection
A word that usually occurs alone and expresses emotion, e.g. oh, hello, ouch, phew, hurrah, help
Definite article
A word used to refer to a specific person or thing, i.e. the
Indefinite article
A word used to refer to someone or something in general, i.e. a, an
Determiner
A word used in front of a noun to denote something specific or something of a particular type. Articles are also determiners, e.g. those, many, my, his, few
