Basic Geometry Terms Flashcards
a location in space, has position only. Named by capital block letter.
Point
Goes forever in both directions, contains an infinite number of points; it’s length cannot be measured. (Named by lowercase letter or two points)
Line
a flat surface made up of points, has no boundaries, contains an infinite number of points. (Named by Capital cursive or any three points)
Plane
The set of all points
Space
Points lying on the same line
Collinear
Points that do not lie on the same line
Noncollinear
Points or lines, rays, segments, that lie entirely in the same plane
Coplanar
Points or lines, rays, segments, that do not lie entirely in the same plane
Noncoplanar
part of a line consisting of two endpoints and all the points between them. It’s length can be measured.
Segment
Part of a line starting at a given point on the line and extending without ending through the other point named. Length cannot be measured since it is a beginning but no end.
Ray
All points that the figures have in common
Intersection of two figures
Distance between two points
Length
For one point to be between two other points, all three points must be collinear
Between
A statement that is accepted to be true
Postulate
A statement which can be proven to be true
