What are vital signs?
Physical signs that indicate an individual’s well being
Provide some examples of vital signs
- Respiratory Rate
- Heart Rate
- Temperature
- Blood Pressure
- Oxygen Saturation (where appropriate)
- Level of conscious
What do you need to think about before performing basic observations?
- Preparation of the patient - informed consent
- Equipment
- Look at the patient in their entirety
- Prior to measuring vital signs, the patient should sit for approximately five minutes
Name the different types of pulse sites on the body
- Carotid
- Brachial
- Radial
- Fermoral
- Popliteal
- Dorsalis Pedis
Where is the Carotid pulse?
Side of the neck
Where is the Brachial pulse?
inner aspect of the forearm at the anti-cubital space (used for B/P)
Where is the Radial pulse?
Inner aspect of the wrist below the thumb (commonest place)
Where is the fermoral pulse?
Inner aspect of the upper thigh
Where is the Popliteal pulse?
behind the knee
What is the pulse rate?
Number of beats per minute
Where is the Dorsalis Pedis pulse?
Top of the foot arch
What is the pulse rate for adults?
60 - 90 bpm
What is the pulse rate for children >6 - 12
