Basic Exercise Science Flashcards
Def: body’s ability to sense the relative position of adjacent body parts.
The cumulative sensory input to the CNS that senses body position and limb movement
Proprioception
Def: structures that respond to mechanical pressure in tissue and sends signals through sensory nerves
Mechanoreceptors
Def: receptors sensitive to change in length of muscles and the rate of change
Muscle Spindles
Def: receptors sensitive to change in tension of the muscle and rate of that change
Golgi Tendon Organs
Def: series of muscles that moves the skeleton
Muscular System
Def: bundles of muscle fibers held together by connective tissue
Muscle
What are the three layers of muscle fibers?
- Epimysium: inner layer immediatley surrounding the muscle
- Perimysium: connective tissue surrounding “fascicle”
- Endomysium: deepest layer
What type muscle fibers are slow twitch?
Type 1
What type muscle fibers are red?
Type 1
What type of muscle fibers are slower to fatigue, produce less force, are smaller and increase oxygen delivery?
Type 1
What type muscle fibers are fast twitch?
Type 2
What type of muscle fibers are white?
Type 2
What type of muscle fibers are quicker to fatigue, produce more force, are larger and decrease oxygen delivery?
Type 2
Which type of muscle fibers are used for running a sprint?
Type 2
Which type of muscle fibers are used for sitting upright and good posture?
